Saltburn writer/director Emerald Fennell talked with Vanity Fair about using Drayton house as the location for Saltburn and why she chose to shoot everything at this location. The current custodian, screenwriter Henry Lytton-Cobbold (author of a memoir entitled Great Great Great and self-described as “probably TMI”) is a lively blogger and presence on X, who welcomes film and television crews. The gardens – and Sebastian and Charles’s carefree enjoyment of them – are equally as famous. Not everyone has been happy with the choice of Castle Howard as the stand-in for Brideshead, however (which was actually thought to be inspired by Madresfield Court in Worcestershire). Christopher Hitchens wrote that it was too “ostentatiously massive”. Castle Howard is a spectacular baroque home which was commissioned by the third Earl of Carlisle. Its most notable elements are its giant symmetrical wings and a crowning central dome.

It is not known when the present park was created, although it would seem at least possible that it was c 1700 when so much was done to the House and its surrounds. A late C18 map shows the park much as it is today, although with a rather more complex network of avenues. I suppose I should really say Brideshead Re-revisited, as Castle Howard served as the location for both the 1981 TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel (an inspiration for Saltburn), and the 2008 film version starring Emma Thompson, Ben Whishaw and Matthew Goode. But it exists in real life in the form of Drayton House in Northamptonshire, the Grade-I listed, 127-room pile belonging to the Stopford Sackville family (since the 1770s).

"In a National Trust or English heritage site, I wouldn’t be able to go near it!" Davies said. Felix and Oliver’s bedrooms are actual rooms in the house, but were altered for cinematic effect. "We flipped them around, painted them, took tapestries down, and put them back up," Davies says. "We turned a bedroom into a bathroom and a bathroom into a dressing room." In the shared bathroom that connects Felix and Oliver’s rooms – and yes, where that scene was filmed – a bath was made especially to accommodate Jacob Elordi’s 6ft 5in frame. Stopford-Sackville – who is a friend of Fennell's family – only agreed to the house being used as the location for Saltburn, so long as its name was never mentioned on screen. But a surge of interest in the home after the film's success has left him both bemused and with his privacy invaded.

The film received several major award nominations, including a Golden Globe nod each for Keoghan and Pike. While the site dates back to 1066, the house is thought to have been built around 1328 and sold in 1361. It has been passed down via inheritance since, with the inhabitants making major changes to the property throughout the centuries. The film divided critics and viewers alike on its first release, with audiences loving and hating Saltburn’s graphic sex scenes and twists and turns in seemingly equal numbers. The discourse surrounding the film only continued when the film arrived on Prime Video over the festive period. The latest film from Promising Young Woman director Fennell, Saltburn follows Oxford university fresher Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) as he becomes obsessed with aristocratic fellow student Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi).

At the age of 23, John Drayton, the third-born son, used part of his inheritance to purchase land and build a house.
